Until the end of the world Germany/France/Australia 1991
‘In the beginning was the Word. …In the end, there were only images’
This is a film about lost. Life is everybody chasing something without knowing exactly what is been chased. People get lost all the time. No one is sure if he is after somehting that doesn’t exist or images of himself. So people follow their instinct, keep on going, and seize the day.
The story is kind of lose and slow. It takes 280 minutes for the director’s cut, terribly long. But as the story unfolded itself, I started to realiz why it’s been organized this way. Since the film was not appreciated by most critics, I didn’t expect much at first. But in the End, I was glad I had been patient. The film has lots to say, about image, words, memory, dream and reality.
There are lots of footage tape by characters in the film with hand-held video, in order to pass on their memories to family and friends. This part is especially interesting, what exactly do they see? For some, illusion is real, dream is more real than physical world, images are more beautiful when seeing througn mind instead of eyes. Or put it another way, people tend to forget that we can see because the brain is functioning. Everybody sees through minds instead of eyes.
